How to Become a Foster Carer At Three Circles: Step-by-Step Guide

Are you interested in becoming a foster carer and making a real difference in a child’s life? At Three Circles Fostering, we provide the support, training, and guidance needed to help you navigate the fostering process smoothly. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of how to become a foster carer, covering essential fostering requirements and what you can expect throughout the journey.

Step 1: Assess Your Eligibility

Before starting the foster care process, it's important to know if you're eligible. At Three Circles Fostering, we welcome foster carers from all backgrounds, as long as you meet the basic fostering requirements.

Fostering Requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 21 years old.

  • Accommodation: You need a spare bedroom for the foster child.

  • Health: You should be in good physical and mental health.

  • Character: A strong sense of empathy, resilience, and patience is essential.

  • Criminal Background: While having a criminal record doesn’t always prevent you from fostering, certain convictions may be a barrier.

Tip: At Three Circles, we understand everyone’s circumstances are different. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, reach out to our friendly team for advice.

Step 2: Initial Enquiry and Home Visit

Once you’ve determined that fostering is the right path for you, the next step is to contact our team. During this stage, we’ll provide basic information and answer any initial questions you have about fostering.

After your enquiry, we will arrange a home visit. This informal visit allows us to get to know you, assess your living environment, and give you more details about what fostering with Three Circles entails. It’s also a great opportunity for you to ask questions about the process, fostering requirements, and the kind of support we offer.

Step 3: Application and Assessment Process

If we are all happy to proceed after the home visit, you'll complete an application form. This is followed by a more in-depth assessment process, also known as a Form F Assessment, which usually takes around 4 to 6 months to complete.

The assessment involves:

  • Interviews: An independent social worker will visit your home several times to talk with you and your family.

  • References & Checks: We'll carry out background checks, including a DBS check (criminal record check), medical assessments, and references from people who know you well.

  • Training: You'll participate in our Skills to Foster training program, which covers everything from child development to managing challenging behaviours.

Step 4: Fostering Panel Review

Once your assessment is complete, the social worker will compile a report based on their findings. This report is then presented to a Fostering Panel, a group of independent professionals who will review your application.

During the panel meeting, you will be invited to discuss your application, and the panel will make a recommendation about whether you should be approved as a foster carer.

Don’t worry – our team at Three Circles will be with you every step of the way, preparing you and answering any questions you might have about this part of the process.

Step 5: Approval and Matching Process

If approved, congratulations! You are now officially a foster carer. Once you’ve been approved, we begin the matching process to connect you with a child or young person who needs a safe, loving home.

We carefully consider factors like your skills, experience, and the needs of the child to ensure the best possible match. You'll be fully supported by your supervising social worker, who will guide you through every placement and ensure you receive the ongoing support you need.

Step 6: Ongoing Support and Training
