Black History Month at Three Circles Fostering
Celebrating Black History Month at Three Circles Fostering
At Three Circles Fostering, we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month, a time to celebrate and recognise the invaluable contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout history and today. For us, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of diversity and inclusion within our fostering community and ensure that every child, foster carer or staff member, no matter their background, feels valued, supported, and understood.
As a fostering agency rated Outstanding by Ofsted, we are committed to providing outstanding support to our foster carers and young people. Many of the children and young people we support come from diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, and Black History Month offers a moment for us to deepen our commitment to celebrating and understanding that diversity.
Our mission is not just to find loving homes for children, but to nurture their sense of identity, pride, and belonging. For Black children and young people in care, this can mean understanding and affirming their heritage, recognising the historical challenges Black communities have faced, and celebrating the rich and vibrant culture that shapes their lives.
Fostering Diversity at Three Circles
We understand that every child has a unique story, and our foster carers are equipped to provide culturally sensitive care that respects each child’s background. This includes understanding the cultural needs of Black young people and offering them a safe space where their identity is celebrated. We are alwyas lookinng at ways we can continue to grow as an organisation and work with our children and families to develop resources that are needed within the community. One example of this is our Black hair and skin care packs that are sent out to children when they are welcomed to us, the idea came from one of our care leavers who said she would have really benefited from a pack like that with a resource to share with the carers. We work with a local Black hair and skin care supplier to custom make these packs.
We are proud to work with a diverse group of foster carers, who bring their own lived experiences to their role. These carers play a vital role in providing representation, consultation and understanding.
Empowering Black Children and Young People in Care
At Three Circles, we believe in empowering children and young people to embrace their identity, explore their culture, and feel proud of their heritage. This is especially important for children in care, who may have experienced trauma or instability and are looking for a sense of belonging.
Through cultural activities, open conversations, and ongoing support, we encourage children to connect with their roots and celebrate their uniqueness. By working together with our foster carers, we ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and valued. We are proud to utilise resources that exist that are made by the community, for the community and have found the resources created by The Black Care Experience to be invaluable to our families.
Supporting Our Foster Carers
We know that fostering is a rewarding yet challenging journey, and we’re here to support our foster carers every step of the way. During Black History Month, we signpost our carers with additional resources to help them celebrate and educate the children in their care about Black history, culture, and achievements. We have also posted out a craft pack to all children to learn more about Black history.
Our commitment to supporting carers goes beyond this month – we offer training and resources year-round to ensure that carers have the tools they need to provide culturally sensitive care, particularly for Black children and young people. We consulted with a care experienced young person to create a black hair and skincare pack which we give to every single young person in our agency who needs it.
